After innovating in 2015 with the baby sleighing activity for children between 3 and 7 years old, as of this winter, Rémi at Mushing Addict and his dogs also offer the kid-sleighing activity for 8 to 12-year-olds.
CONCEPT AND APPROACH
Dog sleighing represents strong values: sharing, discovering the environment, contact with the sleigh dogs.
In 2015, MUSHING ADDICT joined the Baby Traîneau Park franchise. This is a group of qualified professionals who are interested in looking for innovative child-suitable methods and specific dog training.
In 2016, MUSHING ADDICT further developed this child-specific approach by starting Kid-Sleighing for older children.
The aim is to enable children to enjoy sleigh sports through safe, fun learning methods, using suitable equipment. In addition to this, MUSHING ADDICT takes great care in training its dogs to be at ease with children.
SLEIGH DOG SCHOOL
BABY SLEIGH FROM AGE 3 TO 7
Rémi offers this activity to small groups of children aged 3 to 7 and asks the parents to participate.
At the foot of the Pelvoux-Vallouise ski resort, just next to the Igloo Pelvoo Village, specific areas are set up and secured so that children can move about.
The games and exercises are adapted so that the children have a good time with the dogs.
The aim is to encourage autonomy and driving their own sleigh drawn by a dog.
A typical session:
– Presentation of the equipment;
– Handling the sleigh;
– Educational approach to mushing;
– Cooperation among the children and parents/children
– First contact with the dogs – mushing with a sleigh drawn by one dog.
KID SLEIGH FROM AGE 8 TO 12:
This is the first year that Rémi is offering this activity to older children. The idea is to form small groups for better cooperation among the children.
Contact with the dogs and taking care of them are valuable experiences where the children can test their limits.
The activity takes place in nature in areas that have been specifically set up and secured for the activity.
Rémi encourages the children to try several levels in order to progress. The ultimate goal is that they drive a dog sleigh on their own.
Kid-Sleighing sessions start with an introduction to dog sleighing in a specific, safe setting.
As the sessions progress, the children will gain:
– an understanding of the sleigh dogs, how to approach and communicate with them;
– an understanding of mushing equipment and how to use it;
– mushing technique skills.
Then, during the improvement sessions, the children will progress along hiking routes.
