Vallouise-Pelvoux

Rocked by the Le Gyr, a tumultuous glacial stream, Vallouise-Pelvoux provides an unrivalled natural setting.

Vallouise and Pelvoux recently joined forces to form the village of Vallouise-Pelvoux.

Pelvoux, gateway to the high mountains

The evocative names of its boundaries (Glacier Blanc, Aiguilles d’Ailefroide), are a delight for mountain- and unspoilt nature lovers. You will undoubtedly pass by this unique place that combines high mountains and towering landscapes … the route to the highest summits.

Pelvoux comprises several hamlets and spreads across a large area, part of which includes high summits such as La Barre des Écrins (4,102 m), Mont Pelvoux (3,946 m), les Aiguilles d’Ailefroide (3,952 m), to name a few.

Pelvoux is focussed on ‘responsible’ tourism and is a delight for nature lovers.

The Pelvoux-Vallouise ski resort, which extends across both villages (Pelvoux and Vallouise) is a small, lively family resort, close to nature and generally benefits from excellent snow conditions and sunshine.

The Pelvoux-Vallouise ski resort covers an area between 1,250 m and 2,300 m in altitude with a 1,050 m elevation and 34 km of marked slopes. Pelvoux-Vallouise is a village resort with a combination of equipment suitable for children, ski slopes for all levels and a wonderful off-piste and ski touring area.

Pelvoux is surrounded by renowned high summits and is the best way to reach the heart of the Écrins National Park. The sector stretches up to the prestigious crown of the massif: La Barre des Écrins.

During the summer season, many activities are also possible (hiking, mountain biking, via ferrata, etc.).

The climb to the Pré de Madame Carle (one of the most visited sites in the Hautes-Alpes) dazzles the hiker with its streams, successions of forests and larch-bordered meadows, fauna and flora that make up an enchanting ensemble. The reward for the visitors is, of course, a magnificent view of the large glaciers: The Glacier Noir and the Glacier Blanc

The charming village of Ailefroide, the last hamlet before the gorges, has become one of the most well-known mountaineering and bouldering sites in the world. It is the start point for high mountain excursions and the footpaths leading to the mountain refuges. It is a unique setting for mountain enthusiasts.

Vallouise, a typical Hautes-Alpes village

Vallouise is a quaint village that has maintained the charm of bygone years and is very popular among those who appreciate the valley. Many suggest that Vallouise provides a calming, peaceful setting for a stay in the mountains. In both summer and winter, its diversity is appealing.

At the gateway to the Écrins National Park, the Vallouise municipality stretches from an altitude of 1,200 m to 3,669 m (summit of Les Bans), and is in the very centre of the valley of the same name, located at the edge of the Gyr and Onde valleys.

Vallouise is made up of several hamlets: Ville, Rière Pont, Le Villard, Puy Aillaud, Le Petit Parcher, le Grand Parcher and La Casse.

Vallouise is the ideal holiday destination for mountain enthusiasts. Indeed, the geographical location where several valleys converge, makes it easier to access to the various hiking, mountaineering and climbing sites.

Proximity to the Écrins National Park means the traditional village serves as a base on the way to the high summits and outings that provide a breathtaking view.

The River Gyr runs through Vallouise and you will be able to experience the pleasures of rafting on the tumultuous, glacial waters; guaranteed thrills and sensations!

The Écrins National Park Centre is located in Vallouise, and is a unique educational centre dedicated to the preservation of our natural resources. Many excursions are organised by the Park Wardens and are an excellent way to raise awareness among all generations of the need to protect species, and how to behave in the mountains.

Vallouise has also managed to maintain its authenticity through its architecture and religious heritage, evidence of periods that shaped the village.

The Saint Etienne Church, the Penitents’ Chapel, the home of the Marchioness de Bardonnèche are testimonies inherited from previous periods.

Vallouise (Puy Aillaud in particular) is part of the Pelvoux-Vallouise ski resort. One of the Écrins’ gems!
