Navigable rivers

The Pays des Écrins is a hot spot for white water in France with the possibility of rafting on the Gyr;

A turbulent stream fed by glacial waters and the Durance, ideal for family excursions and to learn kayaking.

The Byaisse:

The Byaisse has its origins in the Oules and Chichin streams at the bottom of Dormillouse, a remarkable, scenic village that can only be reached on foot. It is fed by melting snow and rain and flows into the Durance.

It is mainly navigated by experienced kayakers.

Grade 2/4, from April to mid-July.

The Durance:

The Durance is the most important river in Provence. It has its source in the municipality of Montgenèvre at an altitude of 2390 m and flows into the Rhône south of Avignon.

It flows through the area for 35 km.

It is a pluvionival river: the flow depends on the natural supply of water from the melting snow and rain.

Grade 2 to grade 4/5

It is a playground for every European kayaker!

The Gyr:

The ultimate mountain river, it has its source at the Glacier Blanc, in the Écrins massif. It flows through the beautiful Vallouise plain and joins the Onde to form the Gyronde, a tributary of the Durance.

It is a glacial river and the flow can vary throughout the day due to the daily supply of water from the glaciers. The hotter it is, the higher the water level. (+15 cm at the end of the day)

Grade 3/4, and depending on the, water level, Grade 5.

The Onde:

A mountain river located in the magnificent Vallouise Valley. Navigated mainly by kayak. It is a pluvionival river.

Grade 3/5+, from April to early August.

The Gyronde:

The Gyronde is fed by the Gyr and the Onde that merge in Vallouise. The river has a very irregular flow: the melting glaciers and the hydroelectric plants can cause major variations in flow across the day.

Grade 3/4/5, from April to August.
